Eileen Gray (Irish, 1878-1976) by ClassiCon Model E 1027 Adjustable Table, United States, late 20th century, designed 1927, polished chromium-plated tubular steel frame supporting a round, adjustable clear glass top, stamped "ClassiCon AA 12055 Eileen Gray," ht. 22, dia. 20 in.
Note: Coming from an aristocratic Irish-Scottish family, Eileen Gray went to London and Paris to study architecture and design. She first made a name for herself as a leading designer of lacquered walls and decorative panels. With her theories on design and architecture, she left an indelible mark on our ideas about living; her work is considered the epitome of Modernism.
Gray’s tubular steel furniture, revolutionary at the time of their creation, are considered classics today. Her Adjustable Table E 1027 is one of the most famous and most-copied designs in the world. It was added to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1978. Its ingeniously proportioned, distinctive form has made this height-adjustable table one of the most popular design icons of the 20th century. It is named after the house E 1027 'Maison en bord de mer' that Eileen Gray built for herself and for her partner, Jean Badovici. The code-name likewise comes from: E is for Eileen, 10 for Jean (J is the 10th letter of the alphabet), 2 for B(adovici) and 7 for G(ray). - ClassiConCondition
