Note: Prior to research uncovered by Catherine Waters Faucon and Ruel Pardee Tolman, this miniature was believed to be of John Water's father, Colonel Josiah Waters Jr. Tolman notes in his work that Malbone's account book documents the painting of John Water's portrait in Charleston, South Carolina, for the price of $50.
