Edmund Henry Osthaus (American, 1858-1928)
Champion Count Whitestone
Signed "Edm. H. Osthaus" l.r., identified and titled on a presentation plaque.
Oil on canvas, 24 x 36 in. (61.0 x 91.4 cm), framed.
Condition: Craquelure, minor flaking to u.l. corner and near right edge, minute pigment loss, minor stretcher marks, with a patch to the reverse.
Provenance: Commissioned from the artist by the owner of Champion Count Whitestone, Illinois; by descent to the current private collection, Washington state.Condition

Patch on the reverse corresponding to a repair on the front in the middle of the dog's body consisting of a 3-inch vertical line of retouch. Further retouch to the u.r. quadrant in the sky in an area of craquelure with some tenting. Under UV examination there is what we believe is natural pigment fluorescence of olive green/brown pigment in the dog's coat and purplish hues in the landscape. The signature, which is painted in brown, also stands out. Minor canvas deformation to u.l. corner with small paint losses.
The consignor reports that the painting was commissioned by her late husband's cousin, who was the dog's owner and who lived in central Illinois. The painting had minor damage on the dog's left shoulder from a freak accident and was restored by professional restorer Lisa Depuy in Tacoma, Washington, some 25 years ago.
