N.B. In this scene of a pack rider in the Eastern Sierra, the remote side of California's Sierra Nevada mountains, Edgar Payne captures a sweeping view of one of his favorite regions. He first visited the area in 1917 or 1918 and maintained a lifelong devotion to its sublime grandeur. Trekking deep into the range, Payne sought vistas that exemplified the serene solitude and immense majesty of the American West, devoid of the industrialization and urban sprawl overtaking other parts of the California landscape. Though figures appear regularly in Payne's Southwestern desert scenes, he seldom included signs of human life in his views of the Sierras. In this rare example, the horses and rider accentuate the overpowering magnitude of the mountain face that dominates the background. The grassy area the figures occupy seems manageable compared to the crevices and crags of the steep glacial formation behind. Payne deftly employs color to further differentiate between the inhabitable, vibrantly sundrenched foreground and the coolly shadowed icy rockface.
