Early French Dragoon Pistol, c. 1720-30, 13 1/2 in., .60 caliber octagon to round barrel with file decorated breech and sculpted top flat extending to the brass blade front sight; single bridle lock with curved plate, stepped bevel edges, stepped and pointed tail with double line border engraving, foliate engraving on and in front of the hammer, engraved below the pan "IEAN DV BOIS/A SEDAN"; walnut stock with carved plateaus around the lock, side plate, trigger guard, breech plug tang, along the barrel, and around the rammer channel; brass furniture including a butt cap with long ears, foliate sculpting and grotesque masks, undecorated stylized crown and disk thumb piece, trigger guard with line decoration and engraved flame finial, openwork foliate scroll and disk side plate, and a faceted rammer and entry pipe with sculpted foliate decoration at the openings; wood rammer, overall lg. 20 1/2 in.
Condition
Condition: Iron is toned to a gray/brown and has minor underlying pitting, barrel appears to have a very narrow bushing around the vent, neck of hammer likely repaired; forestock is restored from about the entry pipes forward although the rammer pipes appear to be original, there may be restoration to the grip; brass toned to a dark yellow, trigger guard has evidence of two patched screw holes and likely repair behind the bow, rammer is not orginal.
