Early French Dragoon Pistol, c. 1710-1730, 14 5/8 in., .65 caliber octagon to round barrel with traces of a fleur-de-lis mark on the left flat, and blade front sight; double bridle lock with slightly curved plate and double line decoration on the pointed tail, the inside of the plate stamped "A"; American walnut stock, possibly restocked in Canada during the 18th century; iron furniture including butt cap with long projecting ears, crown and shield thumb piece, trigger guard with pointed drop finial, simple elongated "S" side plate, and faceted rammer and entry pipes each secured to the stock by two pins, wood rammer, overall lg. 22 in.
Condition
Condition: Iron is generally bright with subtle gray/brown toning; vent area of barrel shows evidence of an old dovetail repair to the vent which appears to have been made during the pistol's active lifetime, there is no obvious indication of reconversion visible inside the breech; lock has restored hammer and steel, side nails appear to be old; stock has a few insect holes, small restored chip on the grip at the top of the butt cap, narrow strips of restored wood along the left ear, crack at the back of the lock mortice extending to the thumb piece, a small crack on the left side of the forestock above the front rammer pipe, and a three inch strip of wood loss along the right side of the forestock near the muzzle; rammer is not original.
