E. Howard & Company Custom Order Carved and Gilded Gallery Clock, Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1900, a special order clock case carved in a wreath pattern with undulating leaves and berries anchored by an acanthus leaf spray, all surmounting a large eagle with outstretched wings perched on a raised plinth, the 17 1/4-in. dia. variegated green marble dial with applied brass roman numerals and signed E. Howard & Co./Boston, eight-day, brass, time-only movement signed E. Howard & Co./Boston/28, recoil escapement, Geneva stop, brass-faced pendulum bob and flat black-painted wooden rod, regulated by a thumb screw on case top, and powered by a U-shaped lead weight, ht. 36 in.
Note: Stamped into the backboard just above the movement: "E./7/1901"; written on the back of the movement: "These works were in the eagle wreath clock that hung in back of the main counter for about 25 years up to the time the Youngs Hotel closed in 1927 at which time I bought it. It has been in my dining room since then and in no way changed. Dec. 3, 1933, Albert Washington Ellis, Medford, Mass."
