Provenance: From the artist to his wife, Mamie Eisenhower; said to have been donated to a charity auction by Mamie Eisenhower, date unknown; purchased by Mae Sue Tally (1921-2017) of Scottsdale, Arizona, from the above; through to William A. Smith, Inc., Auctioneer & Appraiser, Plainfield, New Hampshire; through to the current owner.
N.B. The reference to "Copy of a Kontny" on the reverse may refer to the Polish/American artist Pawel August Kontny (1923-2002).
Mae Sue Tally included a note dated June 30, 2011, in which she explained that she knew Mrs. Eisenhower from time spent over the years at the same spa in Phoenix, Arizona. Mrs. Eisenhower told her that the President's favorite ways to relax were to paint or play golf. Dr. Talley was impressed with Ike's talent and bought the painting when it became available at auction. A photo of the letter accompanies the lot.
