- Lot Description
Dunmeyer Percussion Rifle, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, second quarter 19th century, 36 11/16 in., .36 caliber rifled octagonal barrel with long pointed breech plug tang, raised rear sight and brass blade front sight, the muzzle decorated with incised circle around the bore and eight punched dots; single bridled percussion lock with flat plate and line-engraved edge, engraved "D" in front of the hammer, the tail with deeply concave and blunted point decorated with line engraving; curly maple stock with line-carved scrolling floral decoration on left side of butt, wrist and around breech plug tang, line carving around the lock, the forestock with double line carving along rammer channel ending in a loop and wave at the entry pipe; brass furniture including butt plate with faceted tang, long toe plate, engraved scroll and openwork patch box, trigger guard with blunt finial, side plate with sharply pointed ends and scroll- and line-engraved surface, three rammer pipes, and a sheet brass nose band; ash rammer with spiral decoration, overall lg. 52 in.
Condition
Condition: Barrel toned to a deep brown with minor pitting at the breech; lock toned to a mottled gray brown; furniture toned to a dark yellow; stock with scattered minor dings and dents, area of wood repair between the breech plug tang and cock; butt plate has a dent on the upper back surface. Side nail is not original.
