Currier and Foster Patent Timepiece or "Banjo" Clock, No. 11 Derby Square, Salem, Massachusetts, c. 1830, mahogany wood front timepiece with half round moldings framing veneered panels, the lower with a 5 x 5-in. printed label within advertising the wares of Currier and Foster, Salem, framed by a Greek key decoration, a turned wooden and glazed bezel over the painted iron Roman numeral dial, carved finial and molded pedestal, eight-day time only brass timepiece with step train, lead weight and pendulum, ht. 38 in.
Note: According to Clockmakers and Watchmakers of America by Spittlers and Bailey, p. 100, Edmund Currier and George B. Foster are listed at No. 11 Derby Square in Salem c. 1831-35. The printed label inside the lower box door list the wide variety of goods offered by this 19th century "jewelry store," including "Ever-Pointed Pencils...a variety of timepieces of their own manufacture, steeple and gallery clocks made to order, watches and clocks of every description." And as if nothing in life ever changes, they also stated, "Cash for old Gold and Silver."
