- Lot Description
Coxe, Tench (1755-1824) A Statement of the Arts and Manufactures of the United States of America for the Year 1810, with a Receipt Signed by Coxe and Clipped Signature of Albert Gallatin (1761-1849) Laid in. Philadelphia: A. Cornman Junr., 1814. First edition, uncut, in boards, Coxe receipt neatly set into the blank opposite the title, Gallatin's signature as Secretary of the Treasury similarly set into first title page, binding worn, but intact, generally good, slight worm damage, 11 3/4 x 9 1/2 in.
"Tench Coxe was an American political economist and a delegate for Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress in 1788-1789. Coxe [was a] proponent of industrialization during the early years of the United States, he co-authored the famous Report on Manufactures (1791) with Alexander Hamilton and provided much of the statistical data. He was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Treasury on September 11, 1789, under Alexander Hamilton when Hamilton was Secretary of the Treasury. Coxe also headed a group called the Manufacturing Society of Philadelphia. He was appointed revenue commissioner by President George Washington on June 30, 1792, and served until removed by President John Adams." (Wikipedia)
