Chippendale Mahogany Desk and Bookcase, probably the mid-Atlantic states, c.1760-80, the top section with a flat molded cornice and blind fret above a pair of molded recessed paneled doors with candle slides below, opening to two adjustable shelves and valanced compartments with three drawers, flanking a prospect door, enclosing three additional compartments and a drawer, all set into a lower section with a slant lid opening to a central prospect door, which opens to two compartments and two drawers, with flanking document drawers having engaged columns, and four valanced compartments and three drawers, all above a case of four thumb-molded drawers resting on claw-and-ball feet with shaped knee returns, ht. 87 1/2, wd. 43, closed dp. 24 in.
Condition
Condition: old refinish, and replaced brasses. imperfections to thumb molding on lid, and a shrinkage crack 5 in. long to the left hand corner of the lid. Lid with Dutchman interior surface, not visible on the front. Loss to the area above the midde of the second drawer escucheon. Some damage to the thumb-molding of the left top of the third drawer. Small patch to the lower right drawer facing of the bottom drawer. Some insect damage to the right back panel of the bottom section.
