N.B. Charles Norman was known primarily as a poet and the author of biographies of E. E. Cummings, Ezra Pound and other literary figures. Born in Russia, he came with his parents to the United States in 1911 and attended NYU in the early 1920s. He then entered journalism, working for The Associated Press, United Press International,
Time and
P.M. His experiences as a seaman on a freighter and as an infantryman in World War II provided the experiences on which he based much of his poetry. Later in life he resided in Newport, Rhode Island.
