N.B. We would like to thank Charles Lanagan for providing the following comments about the painting. "The vessel is flying a pilot jack from her foremast and the mainsails are aback while hands aloft are stowing sail. All of this activity tells us that she is waiting for a pilot. The pilot will take her safely into the Royal Naval Shipyard at Portsmouth some three miles away.
"From her main mast she is flying a Royal Naval Pennant with the cross of St. George. The pennant could indicate who is the commander of the vessel or alternatively could indicate that she is returning to her home port after a long sea voyage. The 'Blue Ensign' flying from her stern shows that she belongs to the blue ship squadron."
