N.B. Born in Seattle, Cecil Bell studied printmaking at the Art Institute of Chicago before coming to New York to the Art Students League, where he studied with John Sloan. Bell settled on Staten Island, and like Sloan, the city and its daily life became a favorite subject. This view shows the ferry leaving Staten Island with the ferry slips at St. George and recognizable buildings including the tower of Borough Hall in the distance. Sloan's influence is clear in this work, with it setting echoing Sloan's Wake of the Ferry (two versions, 1907), combined with the social realism of mid-century artists like Reginald Marsh.
