Canadian/American School, Early 19th Century
Portrait of a Canadian Military Officer Robert Richardson
Unsigned, inscribed on the reverse "Robt. Richardson's Portrait/taken the 21 day of May/Montreal in the year/1814," and further inscribed with the subject's name in pen along a stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 23 x 18 1/4 in., in a canted veneered frame.
Condition: Relined, retouch.Condition
Condition: The piece is relined and has been retouched. There is no craquelure to speak of. Retouch is evident under the blacklight in spots in the upper right quadrant, in a small 1/2 inch area above the subject's right eyebrow, in an area of the center of his uniform, and other small areas in the lower left quadrant, including a small vertical area in the subject's upper right arm. It also appears as if the artist reworked the edge of the subject's head. The frame is antique and in good condition.
