British Pattern 1781 Land Service Pistol, c. 1780s, 12 in., .57 caliber round barrel with ring decorated breech and Tower of London proof marks; double bridled straight convex lock with double line engraving on the edge and cock, pointed tail engraved "TOWER," engraved with a crown over "GR" below the pan along with a stamped crown broad arrow acceptance mark, the inside of the lock plate stamped star over "IM"; walnut stock with carved plateau around the breech plug tang, remnants of a storekeeper's mark on the right side of the wrist and stamped "JR" behind the side plate; brass furniture including a butt cap with long straps, trigger guard with acorn finial, thumbpiece, convex surface side plate with added steel belt hook, tapered front rammer pipe and straight stock entry pipe, original wood rammer with tapered brass tip, overall lg. 19 in.

Note: Many Pattern 1781 Land Service pistols were given to Portugal during the Peninsular War. The Portuguese added a steel belt hook to the pistols. The "JR" stamp behind the side plate indicates Portuguese service.

Condition: Iron bright and smooth; stock with scattered dings, dents, and some old worm holes.
