British Pattern 1778 British Sea Service Musket and Bayonet, late 18th century, 36 1/2 in., .79 caliber round barrel with ring decoration at the breech, and two crown and crossed scepters marks and an illegible barrel maker's mark on the left side of the breech; straight double bridle lock with double line border engraving, the pointed tail stamped "TOWER" and stamped with a crown over "GR" and crown broad arrow mark below the pan, the inside of the lock plate stamped with a crown over "7" inspector's mark; walnut stock with traces of a storekeeper's mark on the right side of the butt, a small crown just to the rear of the trigger guard, the rammer channel marked in between the first and second pipes "8" and with assembly number "IVI," and between the second rammer pipe and entry into the stock "I.M" and with an illegible stocker's name; brass furniture proper for the pattern including a sheet brass butt plate with blunt tang, trigger guard with bulbous finial, flat side plate with a broad arrow cast in to its inside surface and with scratched assembly number "IVI," and two cast brass rammer pipes; steel rammer with button head and threaded end, overall lg. 52 1/8 in; with British socket bayonet having a blade with two fullers, remnants of a cutler's mark on the top, short shank, socket with three-step slot and collar at the base, blade lg. 15 3/4, overall lg. 20 in.
Condition
Condition: Reconverted barrel has a mottled gray/brown surface with minor to moderate underlying pitting; lock is not original to the gun, is toned to a light brown, has a reproduction mainspring and possibly a replaced sear spring; stock has scattered dings and dents, a gouge on the right side of the butt, a crack at the breech extending to the upper side nail hole, the lock mortice has some wood loss at the upper back area, and some wood restoration at the tip of the forestock; brass is toned to an oxidized yellow, rammer has pitting. Bayonet has gray/brown toning.
