British 2nd Regiment of Foot Pattern 1769 Short Land Service Musket, c. 1780, 41 7/8 in., .82 caliber round barrel with ring decorated breech marked with Tower of London ordnance proof marks, a small crown at the rear of the breech plug tang, star over "IW" barrel maker's mark on the left side and engraved "2 = REGT" on the top of the barrel; double bridle lock with convex surface, double line border engraving around the edges and on the cock, the pointed tail engraved "EDGE/1761" and engraved below the pan crown over "GR" and with stamped crowned broad arrow ownership mark, the inside of the lock plate with inspector's mark crown over "3" and lock maker's mark "RE" for Richard Edge, in addition there is a "G" stamped just behind the forward side nail hole; walnut stock with carved plateau around the breech plug tang and small crown inspector's mark stamped to the rear of the trigger guard; brass furniture standard for the pattern including butt plate with pointed tang, trigger guard with acorn finial, thumbpiece engraved "1/17," flat side plate with assembly number "XVIIII" scratched into the inside surface, brass rammer pipes with long flaring front pipe, brass nose cap, steel rammer with threaded end, reproduction sling swivels, overall lg. 57 5/8 in.
Condition
Condition: Barrel toned to a gray brown, pitting at vent area, over size vent; lock has deep brown patination with minor to moderate pitting in the vent area, top jaw and jaw screw, and steel likely replaced; trigger guard has a crack across the screw hole that secures the thumb piece; stock has scattered dings and dents, an area of wood abrasion and loss on the left side near the lower portion of the butt plate, wood restoration at butt plate pin, trigger guard pin, rear barrel pin, old crack on left side from barrel breech into the side plate area, old crack extending forward about 1 1/2 in. from the front of the lock mortice, forestock is restored back to the just in front of the entry pipe; rammer is not original.
