Brigadier General Kenner Garrard's Presentation Sword from the 146th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment After Gettysburg, c. 1863, gilt-brass knight's head pommel, silver grip with raised foliate, medical, and star designs, counter-guard is an eagle with spread wings over a shield langet, steel blade is etched with foliate designs, gilt-brass scabbard has ornate carry ring bands, and engraved in between "TO/Brigadier Genl. K. Garrard/from the/Officers of the 146th Regt. N.Y. S. Vols./July 27, 1863," also engraved with foliate designs the length of the scabbard, blade lg. 31 1/2, overall lg. 40 1/2 in.
Provenance: The collection of Nicholas A. Penachio.
Note: Garrard began his service as a cadet at the United States Military Academy and graduated eighth in his class in 1851, served in Texas prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, and was imprisoned as the war began. After his release he went north and in 1861 became the commandant of the United States Military Academy. On August 27, 1862, he became Colonel of the 146th New York Volunteer Infantry and was in command at the Battle of Gettysburg on July, 2, 1863, at Little Round Top. After the death of Brigadier General Stephen Weed at Little Round Top, Garrard succeeded him as Brigade Commander. In early 1864 he transferred west to the Army of the Cumberland. He was appointed Brevet Major General of Volunteers, and in March 1865, Brevet Major General of Regulars.

Some gilt loss on the hilt and scabbard, a few light spots on the blade but in overall fine condition. Missing the chain on the hilt.
