N.B. German-born photographer Bill Brandt adopted Great Britain as his home in 1934. He used his family connections to gain access to a variety of subjects, creating a portrait of London life that revealed incisive social contrasts. The resulting book, The English at Home, was published in 1936. A variant of this image was reproduced in "The Perfect Parlourmaid," Picture Post, vol. 4, no. 4 (July 29, 1939), pp. 43-7. The subject was employed by Brandt's uncle.
