Provenance: By descent within the family of George Perkins Merrill, who directed the Gems and Minerals Department at the Smithsonian Institution from 1917 to 1929.
N.B. A typewritten note affixed to the back of the frame indicates that this is a depiction of Haley's Comet, painted for G.P. Merrill for his book

Minerals from Earth and Sky [New York: Smithsonian Institution series Inc, 1944]) There is also an obituary for Gertrude R. Brigham taped to the frame backing paper.

Condition: Framed dimensions are 9 1/2 x 11 5/8 x 1 inches.
Taped to the back is an obituary for Gertrude R. Brigham, probably dating from 1970, which at first seems unrelated to the work at hand. However, the obituary noted that Miss Brigham, who was an artist, worked at some point for the Smithsonian Institution as a translator and editorial assistant, so perhaps she had a hand in the publishing of
Minerals from Earth and Sky, the book for which this painting was created.
