Condition: Toning/fading, foxing, staining, stabilized tear across upper left corner, small losses or creases to corners, sheet laid down on matboard support.
N.B. This watercolor relates closely to Rowlandson's work
Blood Royal in the collection of the British Museum. There are subtle differences in the placement of the figure group on the left and in the handling of the doorway through which Ernest Augustus enters. A Portrait. That print shows only the central figure striding through a landscape with a tower or steeple in the background.
Ernest Augustus was the fifth son of the British monarch George III and became the King of Hanover in 1837, at the time of the death of William IV and Victoria's ascent to the British throne.
