Russian Pictures, Works of Art, and Icons, April 5, 1990, Lot 48, with the alternative title (see above).
N.B. The subject of this painting shows two young girls, illuminated by candle light, as they playfully try to discern the identities of their future husbands in the shadows cast on the wall. A Pimonenko painting of this subject and size, bearing the title
Christmas Divination, 1888, may be seen in the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, and a smaller version is in the National Art Museum of Ukraine, Kiev. The Sotheby's catalog referenced above notes that Pimonenko rarely signed his works, and the signature applied here, of the more famous artist Konstantin Egorovich Makovsky (Russian, 1839-1915), was added later. The subject is extremely well known and has been popularized through postcards and reproductions.
We would like to thank Ivan Samarine for his kind assistance with cataloging this lot.
