Condition: Lined, minor retouch, scattered small paint losses, stable craquelure, minor frame abrasions.
Provenance: The collection of Lilian Armstrong, art historian, and Peter Fergusson, architectural historian, both Wellesley College faculty chairs, purchased from Bonhams, London, c. 1968.
N.B. The work has an interesting history in that it was stolen from the current owners in 1978 but then recovered a year later when it surfaced in Sotheby's New York sale of Old Master Paintings and Drawings on May 30, 1979.
Condition
Condition: Framed dimensions are 22 1/4 x 27 1/2 x 2 3/8 inches.
Clipped to one of the stretcher keys is a stamped U.S. Grand Jury S.D.N.Y. evidence label dated June 12, 1979. There is also a lot sticker from the Sotheby's May 30, 1979, auction bearing the sale and lot numbers "4258 x48"
