Attributed to Claudio Coello (Spanish, c. 1632-1693)Portrait of Marguerite of ParmaPossible abraded signature l.l., attributed on a presentation plaque, with two address labels and an uninscribed gummed label from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, affixed to the frame.
Oil on canvas, 48 1/2 x 38 3/4 in. (123.0 x 98.5 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined, substantial retouch, areas of skinning, varnish inconsistencies, fine craquelure.
N.B. The two address labels are handwritten and likely are from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as they are of the same design. One is affixed to the stretcher, the other to the frame. They are both inscribed "Mrs. Ezra Mayer/77 Bay State Rd./18 [within a circle]," and the one on the frame also says "frame." There is no indication of a loan number on any of the labels. Given the two labels, the work was probably unframed while at the Museum, which may indicate that it was there for conservation treatment. Now a Boston University dorm, 77 Bay State Road was a prestigious address known as The Sheraton Apartments, developed in 1923.
