N.B. This painting was sold by Skinner in January 2015 (Sale 2779B, Lot 305), prior to its restoration. The 2015 catalog entry for that item mentions the attribution to van der Helst on a fragmentary label on the stretcher. When the painting was conserved and restretched, that label and others were covered by black tape that secures the edges of the canvas to the stretcher. Old photos of the back including the labels are available for review.
Condition
Condition: Framed dimensions are 56 3/4 x 48 x 2 1/2 inches.
At preview, the backing board was removed, revealing that a stretcher bar was replaced during a previous conservation treatment.
Only minor retouch fluorescence in the hair and occasionally in the background. There is a small area on the lower right side where one can see a small repair in raking light with some fluorescence in that area. This is to the right of the sitter's sleeve and sword hilt.
