New Paintings by Arthur G. Dove, April 20-May 20, 1936, An American Place, New York.
N.B. In 1933, Arthur Dove moved from the north shore of Long Island to his family's farm in Geneva, New York. Though the move was necessitated by financial struggle and the settling of his deceased mother's estate, Dove made the most of his five years there by taking as his subject matter the family farm and the local barnyard animals, as well as the rural landscapes and industrial areas nearby.
Cow, painted in 1935, demonstrates Dove's impulsive, momentary response to nature through gestural lines and washes of color. He had an affinity for watercolor, first using the medium to create small studies for larger oil paintings, and by the 1930s making stand-alone works in watercolor for exhibition.
