N.B. Tony Sotomayor settled in San Francisco in 1923. He worked first washing dishes in the kitchen at The Palace Hotel, where he gained recognition making caricatures of his coworkers. He was soon busy illustrating newspapers, magazines, and books, and in the1930s he decorated two murals at the hotel. This humorous scene shows couples dancing in The Garden Court at the Palace Hotel.
Sotomayor's caricatures appeared in the
San Francisco Chronicle and
Life. He taught art at Mills College in Oakland (1942-43) and at the California School of Fine Art (1946-50). Talented across many mediums, he became a staff artist at the
San Francisco Chronicle and designed costumes and scenery for the San Francisco Opera and Ballet.
