Anson A. Martin (British, act. 1840-1861)
Two Works: Standing Portraits of Mr. George Penn and Mrs. Penn in Landscape Settings
Mrs. Penn signed and possibly dated "...Martin..." l.r., Mr. Penn unsigned, both dated "1851" on presentation plaques.
Both oil on canvas, 36 x 28 in. (91.5 x 71.0 cm), in non-matching frames.
Condition: Both lined and with probable old retouch, craquelure, surface accretions and grime.
Provenance: Collection of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Boston.Condition
Condition: Mrs. Penn 36 x 28 in (91.5 x 71.0 cm), framed to 41 x 33 x 1 1/2 inches, with a Fenway Art Center, Boston, label affixed to the frame backing foam core.
Mr. Penn 36 x 28 in. (91.5 x 71.0 cm), framed to 46 x 38 x 2 1/2 inches, with a label from John Clowes Grundy, Printseller to the Queen, Manchester, affixed to the stretcher. John Clowes Grundy (1806-1867) was a leading Manchester printseller in the mid-19th century.
