Colt Biting His Rump
Monogrammed "A.H.H." in the bronze on the side of the base beneath the colt's right
rear leg, stamped "2" l.r. beside the monogram, and with an indecipherable mark and the copyright symbol beneath the monogram, incised "Roman Bronze Works, Inc." at the bottom edge of the back of the base.
Bronze with brown patina, height 12 5/8 in. (32.0 cm), on a marble plinth.
Condition: Minor dust and dirt.
Provenance: Purchased through the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, Inc., New York, 1977, then by family descent to the current owner.
N.B. According to documents accompanying the lot, Colt Biting His Rump was cast from the artist's plaster c. 1972 by David Ratner of Museum Pieces, Inc., the royalties for the sale of which would benefit the A.H. Huntington Prize fund of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, Inc., New York. This bronze was one of the last, if not the last, sculpture for the Museum Pieces series and was a very limited edition. The accompanying documents include a copy of a letter/contract to the artist from Sally Swan Carr, president of the art club, and countersigned by the artist, requesting permission for David Ratner to pick up the plaster from the Roman Bronze Works foundry, where it was stored. In 1976 the Club mounted an exhibit in the Union Carbide Headquarters on Park Avenue in New York. Among the works offered was Colt Biting His Rump, one of the three casts that the Club had made.
