American School, Mid-19th CenturyThe Paddlewheel Steamer Huntress on the Kennebec River, MaineSigned "Maine, Samuel Brown, H.S.P." the vessel identified on the side.
Watercolor and gouache on paper, 14 1/4 x 19 in., in an eglomise mat, framed.
Condition: Paper toned.
Provenance: Probably descended in the family of Robert Danforth Ogg (1918-2006), who was born in Gardiner, Maine, and whose name appears on a handwritten jelly label affixed to the reverse. The painting was purchased from an estate sale in San Leandro, California.
Note: an old typed note on the reverse reads "Steamer 'Huntress', wood-burner, Capt. Kimball, put on Gardiner-Boston Run June 1838. On completion of Railroad to Portland in 1841 was put on Gardiner-Portland route. In 1847 the Huntress brought Pres. Polk and his cabinet to Maine on a visit to Oaklands and Augusta." According to the consignor's research (also typed and affixed to the reverse), the building at left along the far shore appears to be the Pownalborough courthouse in Dresden, Maine.
