American School, 19th Century
Portrait of the Extreme Clipper Ship Stag Hound. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 19 x 31 in., in a modern giltwood frame.
Provenance: Samuel L. Lowe, Jr., Antiques Inc., 80 Charles Street, Boston, Massachusetts. Photocopies of chapters on nautical history books which discuss the importance of the Stag Hound are included in the lot, having been provided by Mr. Lowe to the consignor.
Note: The Stag Hound was the first of the extreme, or sharp, clipper ships, so called because they were built with dramatically pointed hulls, for greater speed. She was designed and built in 1850 by famed builder Donald McKay, of East Boston, Massachusetts. Her first voyage was to San Francisco, where she made it from New York in just 108 sailing days around Cape Horn. She was 225 feet long overall, and had a tonnage of 1534, and was built for merchants George B. Upton and Sampson & Tappan.
