American Musket, likely New England, c. 1775-1785, strongly resembles British land pattern muskets with a 39 7/8 in., .73 caliber round barrel with ring decoration at the breech and indecipherable mark on the left side of the barrel, top mounted bayonet lug; French Model 1763/66-style double bridle lock with partial mark behind the pan, the inside surface of the lock plate marked "N"; cherry stock of English form with pronounced carved plateau around the breech plug tang, rammer channel with assembly number "XVII"; brass furniture including a short land pattern-style butt plate with pointed tang, land pattern-style trigger guard with acorn finial, flat land pattern-style side plate, tall heart-shaped thumbpiece, two long tapering rammer pipes with flaring forward ends, a barrel-form entry pipe and a nose cap marked with assembly number "XVII" on both sides; original sling swivels; steel rammer with button head with remnants of coarse threads at the base, the base marked with assembly number "XVII," overall lg. 56 in.
Condition
Condition: Barrel and lock bright with subtle mottling, minor pitting at vent and around pan area of lock; brass toned dull yellow; stock with dings and dents particularly on the forestock, the wrist with repaired break, old crack in the forward end of the lock mortice.
