American/Canadian School, Late 19th/Early 20th CenturyPortrait of a Barn ComplexUnsigned.
Watercolor and gouache on paper, 21 x 27 1/2 in., matted and framed.
Condition: Minor moisture staining at bottom edge, some acid burn from previous framing most visible in sky, other minor imperfections.
Note: Robert Bishop, author of the 1979
Folk Painters of America, held this anonymous artist's work in such high esteem that he illustrated an example of it on the dust jacket of that pioneering book. A simpler but similar work sold in 2006 is inscribed "T. Bonneau" and "Iberville, P.Q." The inscription lends credence to the artist's possible French Canadian identity and underscores where he worked - Iberville is a small city about 30 miles south of Montreal, and 30 miles north of the head of Lake Champlain and the American border.
