Alfred Schwarzschild (German, 1874-1948)Four Men in a Rocky Boat. Initialed and dated "A.S. 39." l.r. Oil on canvas trimmed and mounted to heavy pressed paperboard, 8 3/4 x 12 3/4 in., framed (under glass). Condition: Tiny paint losses to c.r. edge in the coat sleeve and tiller of the boat, minor surface grime and accretions.
N.B. Descendants of the artist have reviewed digital images of this painting and offer some explanation of its meaning. The figures shown are the four Schwarzschild brothers, Otto, Alfred, Herman, and Robert, at the brink of World War II. Alfred, the artist, peers over the gunwale, sick with worry. Otto, who was a stockbroker, steadies the rope, while Herman, a philosopher, guides the boat and the youngest, Robert, who was a businessman, seems to chart his course for the future.
We would like to that Theo Straker, daughter of the artist, for her kind assistance cataloging this lot.
