N.B. This painting was reviewed via high resolution digital photographs by Dr. Fred Meijer of the RKD, who has confirmed its authenticity. A copy of Dr. Meijer's email accompanies the lot. Dr. Meijer notes that the composition is unusual for Alexander Adriaenssen, and he knows of no other example that includes a living bird. However, the signature and the handling are fully characteristic for the artist.

A pencil inscription written directly on the back of the panel states "May 1860 Restored by/ Mr. Howorth/Kneeland Street/Boston." The back is also inscribed with a later chalk notation "NC1756."
On page 22 of the Boston Directory of 1865, there was an advertisement from John Howorth, Restorer of Oil Paintings, 25 Kneeland Street, Boston. The ad references the firm of Geo. Howorth & Son, "established in Boston for the last 30 years."
