After Robert Dodd (British, 1748-1816)His Majesty's Ship Victory Under Sail from Portsmouth to the Downs with the Corpse of the Immortal NelsonPublished by John P. Thompson, London, 1806, titled in the plate, with a label from Arthur Ackermann & Son, London, affixed to the frame backing.
Hand-colored aquatint, sight size 21 x 30 1/8 in. (53.3 x 76.7 cm), framed.
Condition: Pale toning and foxing, pale stain to lower margin, two small punctures or abrasions (one l.r. in margin, one u.r. in sky), not examined out of frame.
N.B. This aquatint is after a painting by Robert Dodd that was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1792. There was a print published that same year by John P. Thompson. The print at hand, however, issued in 1806, was probably from a different publisher, the plate itself having possibly been sold after 1792.
