Provenance: From the estate of Harold L. Smith Sr. and Marcelle P. Smith (c. late1980s), by family descent to the current owner. Mr. Smith worked for the U.S. Department of State in Paris, where the work was acquired.
N.B. This work is a copy after an autograph painting by Rembrandt in a private British collection (https://rkd.nl/en/explore/images/40608). The Rembrandt original, which was trimmed from a rectangle to an oval prior to 1793, is oil on canvas mounted to panel measuring 68.7 x 53.5 cm. Although the sitter is not identified, the work has been variously described as a portrait of Rembrandt's sister Liesbeth or of Saskia van Uylenburgh.
The portrait at hand was reviewed by experts from the Netherlands Institute for Art History who confirmed that there are multiple copies of this popular work. This one seems to adhere to the Rembrandt original fairly closely in terms of the modeling of the face.
