N.B. The painting at hand was reviewed via digital photographs by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD). The work was already documented in their files, having been brought to their attention in 1998 by a former owner. The RKD noted several other versions of this painting, but none that they felt were by Wouwerman himself. They conclude that the works are all versions after a lost painting of this subject by Philips Wouwerman.
Similarities to the works of Jan van Huchtenburg (Dutch, 1647-1733) have also been noted by other sources.
