After Gerard Dou (Dutch, 1613-1675)
The Evening School
No visible signature, two "M.F.A." gummed labels inscribed "Geo. T. Cruft..." in pencil affixed to the reverse and the frame.
Oil on partially cradled panel, 18 1/2 x 14 1/4 in. (47.0 x 36.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Panel with warping, vertical cracks, retouch, craquelure with small area of lifting l.c., varnish inconsistencies, heavy varnish layer.

George Theodore Cruft was the grandson of Edward Cruft (b. 1776), lawyer and friend to both John and John Quincy Adams, and cousin by marriage to Abigail Smith Adams. The painting at hand descended in the Cruft family to the current consignor's estate in Concord, Massachusetts.Condition
Condition: Framed dimensions are 25 3/4 x 21 1/4 x 1 1/2 inches.
Heavy varnish layer that fluoresces green typical of masking varnish.
