Aaron Willard Mahogany Inlaid "Rocking Ship" Tall Clock, Boston, c. 1790, fret-top case above the brass stop-fluted columns flanking the roman numeral dial signed "Aaron Willard/Boston," with raised gilt and floral decorated spandrels, seconds bit, pierced hands, and rocking ship in the arch that is signed on the back "Mr. Childs," brass stop-fluted quarter-columns flanking the full-length line-inlaid waist door, base with similar inlaid decoration, eight-day time and hour-strike mechanism, regulated by a two-part pendulum and two brass-cased weights, ht. 95 in. with finials.
Condition
Condition: the back of tin rocking ship arch is signed "Mr. Childs," signature appears to be 19th century. Case refinished, rocking ship has paint loss, dial with paint loss, signature good under UV light, replaced feet, fret is possibly old replacement with splits, and repairs. There is a 1/4in. thick shim attached to ogee molding where the hood sits.
