N.B. In the second half of his career, Aaron Siskind made a departure from the social documentary photographs that he made as a member of the New York Photo League and began to create photographs that brought comparisons to Abstract Expressionism. In the 1950s, Siskind conceptualized a project of photographing graffiti that reflected on the paintings of his friend, the painter Franz Kline. Realized two decades later, Siskind created a body of work that focused in on, and abstracted his subjects to the degree that its original content becomes lost. What remains are highly graphic, energetic brushstrokes reminiscent of Kline's paintings. Printed in photogravure, the photographs contain a rich, painterly quality.
