54th Regiment of Foot Pattern 1777 Short Land Service Musket, c. 1777-1783, 41 13/16 in., .82 caliber round barrel with ring decoration and Tower of London ordnance proof marks at the breech; pattern 1777 double bridle lock with double line engraving around the border and on the cock, engraved on the pointed tail "TOWER" and crown over "GR" below the pan with traces of the crown broad arrow government ownership mark, inner surface of the lock plate stamped "TB" and marked with a crown inspector's stamp, indistinct assembly number cut into the edge of the lock plate forward of the pan; walnut stock of proper configuration including subtle carved drops at rear of lock mortice and side plate plateau, crown over "GR" storekeeper's mark struck into the right side of the butt, indistinct inspector's marks behind the trigger guard, "TB" mark behind the side plate, small crown stamped inside the side plate mortice, rammer channel with an indistinct mark between the second and third rammer pipes, stamped between the third and entry pipes are assembly number "XXIII," "P," "WG," and an indistinct name; brass furniture proper for the pattern including a butt plate with pointed tang, trigger guard with acorn finial, side plate marked on the inside surface with assembly number "XXIII" and stamped initial "B," thumbpiece engraved "54 REGT," long front rammer pipe with flaring end, tapering second pipe, and barrel-shaped third and entry pipes, and brass nose cap; sling swivels present; steel rammer with button head; overall lg. 57 5/8 in.
Note: The 54th Regiment of Foot arrived in American on May 3, 1776 and saw action at the Battle of Sullivan's Island and the Battle of Long Island in 1776 and the Battle of Rhode Island in 1778. This musket may be one of the 180 arms issued to the 54th Regiment by a warrant dated December 24, 1778. In 1779 the 54th participated in raids on New Haven, Fairfield and Norwalk, Connecticut. In September 1781 the regiment took part in the assault on Fort Griswold.
Condition
Condition: Barrel and lock toned to a deep brown with minor to moderate pitting at the breech and pan areas; lock with deep wear on the steel; side nails appear to be quite old, but likely not original; brass with dull mottled yellow surface; right side of forestock has a crack and old 8 1/2 in. loss at barrel edge, split in rammer channel only between the nose cap and first rammer pipe, old crack on bottom of stock beneath the forward extension of the trigger guard, small crack at the front of the lock mortice, old wood loss at the upper rear of the lock mortice, left side of butt has a scraped down area perhaps to remove an old marking; front sling swivel likely not original; rammer not original.
