Diedrich, Engraver, map no. 20 showing the areas north dividing in the printing at Comal, Hays, Travis, Bastrop, Fayette, Austin, Harris, and Liberty Counties, and map no. 21 showing the Gulf coast from Matamoros to Calcasieu Inlet, below the English and Deutsche mile conversion chart, "County, Plantage, River, Bayou, Creek, Mountain," various words translated for the traveler, hachures used to show elevation, sheet: 18" x 21". Note: "...the first edition of Charles William Pressler's earliest, little-known map of Texas, created just one year after he began working for the General Land Office...Pressler himself had immigrated to the U.S...and he was keenly aware of the needs of other potential immigrants...This striking two sheet map appeard in George von Ross's 1851 immigrant guide, Der nordamerikamische Freistaat Texas...Along with Jacob de Cordova, his former employer, Pressler can be regarded as the maker of the first truly accurate maps of Texas, incorporating the latest geographical surveys and border delineations...It is one of only a handful of maps of the state produced from 1830-1860 that contributed to Texas geography as a whole and provided an important record of the evolution of the state during the pivotal years when it was first settled by Europeans."
