THE STRETCH-JUDSON FAMILY WALNUT TALL CASE CLOCK, BY PETER STRETCH, SIGNED, PHILADELPHIA, 1705-1710, the rectangular hood top with a molded cornice above a plain frieze and hinged engaged Doric order colonnettes flanking a glazed opening to a square brass and silvered dial face with applied corner spandrels of paired putti holding aloft a crown amidst swirling leafy foliage, enclosing a silvered ring dial with black Roman numerals and feathered half-hour markers, between the VII and V engraved "Peter Stretch," beneath a central reticulated blued steel hour hand, over tapering and cove detailed molding, on a long conforming pendulum case centering a molding trimmed recessed panel door over cove molding on a block form base, raised on a stepped molded plinth with turned bun feet, verso the brass thirty-hour clockworks with single weight on chain and seconds beating pendulum with anchor recoil escapement, outside count wheel controlling hour strike on bell, bell post attached to front plate, offset hammerhead on square arm, four knop and raised ring turned pillars joining plates. Height: 90" Width: 20" Depth: 10 3/8" Note: Peter Stretch (English/American 1670-1746) a Quaker born in Leek Staffordshire, England, he trained as a clockmaker and after his arrival to Philadelphia in 1702 he was soon making clocks such as the single hand thirty-hour example represented here. By the second decade Stretch had become a prominent member of Philadelphia society and renown for his fine quality clocks. Provenance: By repute:Joseph Stretch (younger brother of Peter Stretch)thence by descent to Francis Edward Judson (1906-1978) and Henrietta Palmer Judson of Wayne, Pennsylvania, thence to their granddaughter, present owner and collector Laura Widing.The case is in professionally restored good condition with a restored cornice and frieze, the long pendulum door has had the modern brass lock replaced to the original style wood latch, the surrounding door molding has been restored to the original style since having been removed over the years, the base plinth and feet are restored to original style after having been removed at some time and replaced with bracket feet. The clockworks have had little work done, the dial face has had the single hour hand blued as it was originally, the interior works have had some dust and dirt removed but other than the early 20th-century weight suspension chain replacing the original rope suspension little appears to have been done. The pinions are worn and the works do not appear to have been serviced nor professionally cleaned for a long period of time.
