Provenance: Meredith Long & Company, Houston, Texas; included in Catalogue Raisonne "The Works of George Inness," compiled by LeRoy Ireland; Collection of Mrs. Jonathan Scott Hartley, New York City (daughter of the artist); Collection of James E. Roberts Fund, Herron Museum of Art, Indianapolis, Indiana, September, 1932; included in catalog raisonne "The Works of George Inness," no. 1144, volume 2, published 2007.
Note: A work from the twilight of George Inness' life and career. The present painting is defined by large swaths of blue in the sky and golden brown grasses interspersed at center by green grass in the horizon and bisected by a single tree. The artists' work retains an excitability in the golden grasses laying askew, somehow capturing the movement of the wind in the foreground. He uses a wide bristled brush and fastly applied, consistent strokes in an overall horizontal motion to paint the grass. As the eye travels upward the landscape becomes distinctly effervescent divided by a single tree. Though the palette is subdued, there is both a sudden melancholy and joyfulness expressed within the yellow color tints and tones of the central tree. The composition is balanced and presents the viewer with a desirable landscape that both intentionally and sublimely causes the viewer to consider the relationship between the earth and the divine.
