AN EXCEPTIONAL CHINESE GILT COUCHED AND POLYCHROME SILK THREAD EMBROIDERED BED HANGING, LATE QING DYNASTY/EARLY REPUBLIC PERIOD, EARLY 20TH CENTURY, of rectangular palatial size and composed of three cream silk covered panels, centering a shaped field outlined in a conforming band with exquisite blossoming and fruiting leafy vine interspersed with varied species of foraging birds, enclosing the field filled with curling berried and flowering stems, exotic split tailed birds and fluttering butterflies, encompassing a roundel with extraordinary needlework of a shimmering phoenix, a long tailed pheasant and other unusual birds amidst bold auspicious blooms surrounding a spread winged Peacock courting an adjacent Peahen, bordered by a shaped ring of carp fish and marine life clusters alternating sacred emblems within verdant foliage, this roundel and central field cornered by ringed panels continuing the finely stitched examples of beautiful birds perched in flower bouquets, within sides of paired wreathes focusing scrolling winged bats clutching coin symbols, the meticulous needlework continuing as undulating berried flowering vine and various bird species within conforming frame form side bands, mounted and professionally set within a giltwood frame. Very good condition for textiles of this age, use, materials and country of origin including but not limited to some old repairs scattered throughout, some expected loose threads and small separations, some fading, discolorations and warped area.
