A VICTORIAN ELABORATELY INLAID MOTHER OF PEARL, EBONY AND ROSEWOOD WORK TABLE, POSSIBLY SPANISH, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY, of sarcophagus form and a hinged lid centering a cluster of blossoming leafy stems within banded and string line borders, enclosed by twist detailed trim and a stepped frame of chevron alternating twist inlaid bands framed by continuous mother-of-pearl foliate decoration, opening to a mirror inset interior lid within rippled and similar banding above a conforming case with a recessed panel centering a rectangular well trimmed in matching inlay and cornered by red tinted and engraved mother-of-pearl rose stems, enclosing eight short side drawers flanked by two facing long drawers fitted with circular knob pulls and each partitioned by miniature bone baluster colonnettes, surrounding a chevron inlaid parquet lid with matching pull, within exterior sides of elongated oval reserves centering a m.o.p. frolicking putto amidst flowering leafy stems enclosed by a lapis blue ground border with similar floral inlay, framed by complex alternating banded details and elegant m.o.p. stylized floral trim, flanked by canted corners of shadow box vignettes centering a silk flower filled striped basket over acorn form pendants and a deep drawer with fine cube parquetry opening to a maroon plush velvet button tufted interior within matching twist silk cord trim reversing to same underside, raised on octagonal columnar legs and scrolling feet continuing m.o.p. decoration and joined by a turned twin baluster stretcher, elevated on German bronze and ebony wheeled casters stamped "D.R.G.M. / 184214." Height: 25 3/4" Width: 23" Depth: 15 3/4" Note: D.R.G.M. is the acronym for Deutsches Reichs Gebrauchs Musterschutz (translates to protected registered design under the Reich Government) followed by the registration number. This registration system was used from 1891 to October 1951.
Condition
Good to very good condition for antique inlaid work tables with surface buildup in areas throughout, some expected small losses, dings, chips, nicks, small old repairs, small cracks, light scratches, marks, maroon velvet interior lining of drawers and cord trim has normal worn areas and dust buildup, mirror has expected discolored patches of silvering from aging. This intricately inlaid table is surprisingly in good condition with a nice old patina but could use a professional cleaning and restoration.
