A SWISS EBONIZED WOOD TRIMMED BURL WALNUT AND MAPLE INLAID MUSIC CYLINDER BOX, BY TROLL AND BAKER, GENEVA, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY, the rectangular hinged lid centering a brass and mother-of-pearl inlaid lozenge form detail, composed of undulating floral vine within rosewood and ebony borders, enclosed by large panels of burled walnut and framed in ebony alternating tulipwood banding within conforming ebonized wood trim, over similarly inlaid sides and opening to an interior fitted with a burlwood framed glass window covering the polished brass and brushed steel music works, centering a music cylinder, length 19 1/2", diameter approximately 3", flanked by four sets of steel combs opposite ten staggered moiré style engraved domed bells surmounted by nicely detailed spread winged birds opposite bee form hammers before an interior brass plate engraved "TROLL & BAKER / GENEVA," within a hand crank handle on left side and two nickel plated levers "CHANGE/REPEAT" above "STOP/PLAY," on right side, beneath the interior lid attached with a printed and calligraphy inscribed paper label numbered 4831, titled "FABRIQUE DE GENEVE / Sublime Harmony Bells / 1 The Blue Danube Waltz Strauss, 2 Masamiello Overture Aubu, 3 Martha Aeh so fromm Flotow, 4 Fra Diavolo On yonder rock reclining Auber, 5 Freisch?tz Dureh die Walder, Arie Weber, 6 Norma March Bellini, 7 Il Travatore Stride la vampa Verdi, 8 Aida Finale & March Verdi / 8 Airs," raised on an ebonized wood stepped molding base on matching corner feet. Condition
Very good restored condition, with expected surface buildup in areas, normal light scratches and dings throughout, age cracks, some fading, and expected light wear from use. The interior brass and steelworks are in good shape with very few tiny oxidized spots scattered about on the brass parts and a few tiny surface rust spots on the steel parts. Simpson Galleries does not guarantee music player mechanics, but this has been played for a few minutes and does so very well.
